Top 10 Search Engine Ranking Factors
Search engine ranking factors are some of the most closely guarded secrets in online business. Google and other search engines don’t publish exactly how they rank webpages in search results, because that would lead to massive gaming of the system and produce non-useful results.
Fortunately, you don’t have to figure out how Google determines search engine rankings all by yourself. There’s an entire industry of professionals who have a good handle on how search engine placement works based on their cumulative experiences.
Better still, their collective wisdom has been collected and published by SEOmoz, a SEO consultancy and website. The top 37 search engine optimization (SEO) professionals were asked to sort the 50+ factors that affect a website’s search engine placement.
Here are the top 10 factors that positively affect your search engine rankings: (We go over each one in detail below.)
  1. Keyword Use in Title Tag
  2. Anchor Text of Inbound Links
  3. Global Link Popularity of Site
  4. Age of Site
  5. Link Popularity within the Site’s Internal Link Structure
  6. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links to Site
  7. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community
  8. Keyword Use in Body Text
  9. Global Link Popularity of Linking Site
  10. Topical Relationship of Linking Page
Here’s each of the top 10 search engine ranking factors, with easy-to-understand explanations and actionable tasks you can apply today.

1. Keyword Use in Title Tag

In Laymen’s Terms: Include the search keywords you are targeting in your webpage’s title tag.
If you have time to do only one SEO action on your site, take the time to create good titles.
– Christine Churchill
The title tag (or “meta title”) is the text that appears at the top of your browser window. Think of it as the title for the webpage. The meta title is also what is displayed as a link in search results.
In the HTML code, the meta title is the text between the <title> tags. For example, the meta title of this article looks like this in the HTML code:
<title>Improve Search Engine Rankings – Top 10 Tips to Improve Search Engine Rankings</title>
Your Action: Use the search keywords you’re targeting in every webpage’s title tag. Have a customized title for each page; don’t be lazy and use the same title for every page on your site.
If you have a brochureware website designed by a Web designer, when you give the designer your text copy for each page, you should also provide a custom title for each page.
For WordPress users, you can install the All-in-One SEO Pack plugin. It lets you modify the title tag of each blog posts.

2. Anchor Text of Inbound Links

In Laymen’s Terms: When other sites link to your webpages, how do they describe the link?
Anchor text of the inbound link is one of the most concise assessments another person can make about what your site/page is ‘about’.
– Mike McDonald
The anchor text is the visible, clickable text of a link. (In the last sentence, the words “anchor text” is the anchor text of the link.)
Looking at how other websites link to you (ie., what they use for the anchor text) tells Google how people are describing your content.
Your Action: When you email other websites to promote your content, mention your preferred anchor text if they choose to link to your site. You won’t always get what you ask for, but it never hurts to ask. And there’s a big payoff if you can get other sites to use the search keywords you’re targeting when they link to you.
Choose anchor text that helps your website/page rank better for your targeted keywords. For example, if I were to ask for a link to this article, I would ask for anchor text that says something like “Top 10 Search Engine Ranking Factors”. That anchor text tells search engines that the link goes to a page about “search engine ranking” — the search keywords that I would love to have this article rank prominently.
That anchor text is better than “the most awesome article ever written”.
While it would be interesting to see which anchor text generates more clicks from human surfers, there is no doubt that the keyword-rich version of the anchor text would help this article’s ranking in search results much more than the keyword-less version.

3. Global Link Popularity of Site

In Laymen’s Terms: How many other websites are linking to your site?
I am a strong believer that a sites overall link popularity drastically effect rankings.
– Neil Patel
In general, the more inbound links to your website, the better it is for you. Every inbound link is a “vote” for your site. If lots of other websites link to you, search engines conclude that lots of people find your content useful or interesting. That makes your webpage rank higher than a similar page with fewer inbound links.
But remember that quantity is not the whole game. As we continue to look at the top 10 search ranking factors, note that the quality and relevance of those inbound links matter greatly.
Your Action: Make link building — the practice of getting more inbound links to your site — a central part of your online marketing strategy.

4. Age of Site

In Laymen’s Terms: The older your website, the better.
I believe it’s always had some importance and within the past two years, aging has taken on more significance in the ranking factors.
– Scottie Claiborne
Older sites have more weight than newer sites. The age of a website is hard to fake. Plus, search engines figure that if your site has been around for so long, it’s probably better than a brand new site.
Your Action: Start today. Be patient. The hard work you put in now to optimize your website may not payoff until next year. The good news is that after next year, you’ll have a leg up on new competition.

5. Link Popularity within the Site’s Internal Link Structure

In Laymen’s Terms: How prominent is the webpage within your own site?
Without the proper linking structure, certain pages may not get enough emphasis. For example, … links directly from the homepage usually do really well.
– Neil Patel
The more prominently you feature a particular page on your site, the more weight search engines will give it.
Your Action: Showcase your best content or the webpage you most want to highlight. Put it in your main navigation menu or link to it from your homepage.

6. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links to Site

In Laymen’s Terms: Are the sites linking to you related to your topic (and targeted keywords)? The more relevant, the more weight those links are given.
I think, in a perfect algorythm, relevance matters. Whether Google has figured out how to pull it off yet or not, I don’t know but I do believe that is the ultimate goal. Whether they get more “weight” or not, relevant links are good business and help with rankings as well.
– Scottie Claiborne
All of your neighbours have a wide variety of thematic inbound link text from a wide variety of topical sites. You have the same anchor text from your unrelated porn/pills/casino link farm. Chances are a search engine can instantly spot you as a ‘deviant’ from the norm and flag you as having an unnatural inbound linking pattern.
– Lucas Ng (aka shor)
This factor is similar to #2 (anchor text of inbound links). How other sites link to you matter. For example, if you have a site about chess
Your Action: Relevance matters. Focus your link building efforts on sites within your topical niche.

7. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community

In Laymen’s Terms: How popular is the site that is linking to you?
Especially withing your niche.
A niche site may not have a high quantity of links but a few links from the ‘authorities’ in the neighbourhood is often enough to rank the site above the authorities for niche-related keywords. The authoritative sites are telling the search engines “Hey, we’re voting for this site for these niche (anchor text) keywords”.
– Lucas Ng (aka shor)
Your Action: Relevance and authority matter. For #6, we said you should focus your link building efforts on sites within your topical niche. This factor says you should prioritize your link building on getting links from the biggest of the relevant sites.

8. Keyword Use in Body Text

In Laymen’s Terms: Within the webpage/article, how often and what keywords being used? How relevant is your article to target keywords?
It is important to use the keyword phrase throughout the page where it makes sense. As engines get more sophisticated, it’s not just the targeted keyword phrase that counts, but the mix of all the words on the page that help to determine what the page is about.
– Scottie Claiborne
Your Action: Use the search keywords and phrases you’re targeting throughout your page or article…. when it makes sense. Don’t cram so many keywords in the article that Google penalizes you for keyword stuffing.

9. Global Link Popularity of Linking Site

In Laymen’s Terms: Links from big websites (ie., sites that have lots of inbound links) are worth more than links from smaller sites.
I like links that are linked to by many sites. I think there’s a big difference between a PR 6 site with 20,000 links and a PR 6 with 500 inbounds.
– Roger Montti aka martinibuster
Your Action: Focus your marketing efforts on the biggest, most authoritative sites. Think of it this way — it’s better to get one link from a big site (like About.com) than to get 10 links from 10 small sites (like personal blogs).

10. Topical Relationship of Linking Page

In Laymen’s Terms: Relevance matters. Links from a webpage that is related to your page’s content are worth more than links from random, unrelated sites.
All links help – on topic helps a lot more overall.
– Todd Malicoat
Your Action: Relevance matters (again). Focus your link building efforts on sites within your niche. And if you can help it somehow, try to get links on specific webpages within a site that’s even more relevant.

Analyze the Full Survey

The results of the full survey are very interesting. We’ve only scratched the surface with our discussion of the top 10 most influential search ranking factors. This survey represents the most authoritative and comprehensive collection of knowledge about Google’s search algorithm. (Outside the company, of course.)
Whether you have a website already or have one in the works, your online business won’t achieve its full profit potential or perhaps not even survive these days without search engine optimization (SEO). So I’d like to share some SEO basics that anybody can implement and see real results, no major technical experience or expertise needed.
Yes, you can do SEO yourself — no need to hire an expensive expert that cannot guarantee results anyway.

Why Search Engine Optimization Is Vital for Your Online Business

The general idea is that the more SEO centered your site is, the more attention it gets from Google, and the higher it appears in the search engine rankings. This is important because when people search for keywords related to your business, they’ll see your website. And they’ll be more likely to click on the link that send them to your landing page, main website, and/or e-commerce drop shipping website.
That’s free traffic from people primed to buy your products or services. They’re actively searching for this information, which makes them more likely to take action, whether it’s to sign up for your email list or actually buy a product.
This traffic is much more powerful and valuable than paid advertising like pay-per-click or banner ads. Consider that, according to industry watch Conductor, 64 percent or more of the traffic to your website will come from SEO efforts, referred as “organic” traffic.
Jupiter Research says its 81 percent. Also important to note is that people who come to your site as organic traffic that comes in through SEO efforts tend to have a higher lifetime value (they spend more money) than those that came in through paid advertising.
And this is important. Consider that most people don’t go beyond the first page of the Google search. And less than 5 percent of searchers go on to the second page of results. According to a study from Advanced Web Ranking 67 percent of the clicks go to the first five results, with the #1 Spot taking in just over 30 percent of clicks.
How do get Google’s attention and get all these benefits? Luckily there are some easy to do tasks you can do yourself to make your website Google-friendly. Follow these simple SEO basics and you’ll see improvement in your Google page rank.
(Now before you say anything, yes, I know there are other search engines out there like Bing and Yahoo. But with Google commanding around 90 percent web searches, you really want to concentrate your efforts on making Google happy.)

SEO Basics — Making Google Happy — and Web Surfers Too

Something I want to clear up right here at the top. Google is very savvy.
You can’t just pack a bunch of keywords on your webpages. Remember back in the early days of the web, when folks would simply include a long list of words related to their niche at the bottom of their home page? Doesn’t work these days, not by a long shot.
First thing to realize is that you have to include your keywords naturally in your content. It can’t seem forced. You’ll include these keywords in the actual written material on your site. You should also have short, attention-grabbing headlines that include a keyword. Also, the keyword should be included at least once near the top of your webpage in the content and then sprinkled throughout the rest of the page, including variations.
Content marketing can be a great strategy for your SEO, but it has to be done right.
As far as SEO basics, this is called on-site optimization.
Google’s focus is now on useful content, added consistently, that is relevant to what people are searching for, like blog posts, articles, videos. Before they recommend your website to their users, they want to make sure you have something to offer as far as advice, important information, and more to people interested in your niche.
Important: don’t duplicate content, whether it’s from other pages on your website or from other websites you own.
One thing to keep in mind is that while you are working on making your website Google-friendly, you can’t forget that real people will be reading your content too. And if they can’t understand what you’re saying — they won’t be back, which impacts your business and search ranking too. So make sure your content is people-friendly and Google-friendly too.
All these strategies should help you build authority in your niche market and compel other sites to link to you — the more links to you — the better your SEO.
Aside from quality content, your SEO efforts should also include work done in your “back office.” Internal linking, for example, is important. Basically your site should have plenty of useful content on related topics… and you should link among these different pages. This will keep visitors on your site longer, which shows Google your site is useful. And, crucially, this also allows Google to crawl all through your website.
Your keyword should also be in your title tag, which is the very short — just one line — bit of text that appears as the highlighted blue clickable link on the Google results page.
You should also take care to fill out the meta description for your webpages. This is a very short description of what’s on the page — it appears under the link in the search results and could help convince the reader to click to find out more. It should also have your keyword at least once. It’s not a big SEO influence but could increase clicks.
If you have photos or images on your site (and you definitely should), don’t forget to include “alt text” that describes the content of that image. Google can’t “see” photos but it does read the alt text. And that increases the changes your images will appear in Google’s image search results.
All of these things can help to positively affect your SEO rankings, but again, the most important factor will be you publishing good quality, original content, on a regular basis.

SEO Basics — Figuring Out the Right Keywords

We’ve talked about keywords being important. But you can’t just come up with them out of the blue. If you optimize for the wrong keywords, even if they are related to your niche, all your efforts will be for nothing. You need to figure out how exactly people are searching for information and tailor your keywords for your website to that… this should also influence the topics of blog posts and other content.
It’s important to use a keyword planner tool to do some serious research of the right keywords to optimize for. Of all the SEO basics, this is where you should start. As having the right keywords will guide all your other optimization efforts.
Google itself has an effective tool here: https://adwords.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/
Let’s look at an example.
Say your niche is yoga. The keyword “yoga beginners” results in just 1,000 to 10,000 searches per month in the U.S, but “yoga for beginners” has 10,000 to 100,000. Can you see what keyword you should be optimizing for?
Another example. If you’re providing a treatment for back pain, the search term “lower back pain relief” has 10,000 to 100,000 searches per month, but “back pain treatment” only has 1,000 to 10,000.
These two examples show how people search for information and products in each niche. And the keywords you pick for your SEO efforts should reflect that. Remember that this research should also guide the content your provide.

The Only SEO Constant Is Change

Another thing to keep in mind is that making your website Google-friendly is not a one-time task. You must create and post useful content consistently. Google is always crawling through the web updating its results pages. Need some blogging ideas? See this article on 40 Great Blogging Ideas for Your Blog.
But if you stick to these SEO basics shared in this article, you’ll have a solid foundation for an optimized site that makes Google happy — and your prospects and customers too. And with a website that comes in higher in the Google results page, you’ll have more of those website visitors too… which is good for business.
And, by the way, you may have heard that Google is always tweaking the algorithm that determines page rank. “Tricks” to get high page rank now may not work a few months from now. That’s definitely true and for more intense SEO tasks you’ll have to stay on top of changes. But that’s nothing to worry about right now. Stick to the basics for now and you'll be utilizing SEO best practices that will pay off for years to come.

1. Create a business Page, not a personal profile.

First thing's first: You need to create a business Page -- not a personal profile -- to represent your brand. Pages look similar to personal profiles, but they include unique tools for businesses, brands, and organizations. Your fans can Like your Page to see updates from you in their News Feeds, which is something they can't do for personal profiles.
Not only will this maximize Facebook's business potential for you, but it's actually against Facebook's Terms of Service to use a personal account to represent something other than that person, like a business. If you've already created a profile for your business, you'll want to convert it into a business Page, which you can learn how to do easily here.
Setting up a page is simple. Just visit this page and follow the step-by-step setup instructions.
facebook-business-page-options.png

2 Add a great cover photo.

Facebook's page design lets you feature a 851 x 315 pixel cover photo at the top of your business Page. You'll want to optimize that cover photo to capture the attention of new visitors, encourage them to explore and learn more, and provide an effective mobile experience -- all the while ensuring you're following Facebook's Page Guidelines.

3. Add a recognizable profile picture.

Pick a profile picture that will be easy for visitors to recognize -- like your company logo, or a headshot of yourself if you're a solopreneur or consultant. Being recognizable is important for getting found and Liked, especially in Facebook Search. Your profile image is pictured at the top of your Facebook Page and is also the thumbnail image that gets displayed next to all your Facebook Page updates, so choose wisely.

4. Add milestones.

The "Milestones" feature lets you highlight some of your business' biggest accomplishments, like award wins, product releases, major events, or other accolades. Recent milestones will be posted to your Timeline, and users will be able to find them later under your "About" tab.
To add milestones, click on the "Timeline" section of your Page, and click the "Offer, Event +" option in the page update composer near the top of your page.
add-milestone.png

5. Choose a call-to-action button.

The option to place a simple call-to-action button at the top of your Facebook Page. You can learn how to add a CTA button to your business' Facebook Page here.
You can choose from seven pre-made button options ("Sign Up," "Shop Now," "Contact Us," "Book Now," "Use App," Watch Video," and "Play Game") and link it to any website that aligns with your business' goals. It could link to your homepage, a landing page, a contact sheet, a video, or somewhere else.

6.Create custom page tabs.

By default, your page tabs are set as Timeline, About, Photos, Likes and More. But Facebook lets you create and leverage custom tabs -- which are basically like landing pages within your Facebook Page, or calls-to-action where you can feature anything from case studies to marketing offers to other promotions you're running.

7.Post at the best times for your audience.

Another common question: When’s the best time to post to Facebook? Unfortunately, there's no perfect answer -- different businesses may find different days and times work best for them. Timing often depends on what your target audience uses Facebook for, the region(s) you're targeting, the content of your post (e.g. funny or serious), and your goals (e.g. clicks versus shares), and so on.
That being said, there is data out there on optimal times to post on Facebook:
  • The best time to post on Facebook is 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Other optimal times include 12:00–1:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and 1:00–4:00 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.
  • Engagement rates are 18% higher on Thursdays and Fridays, and weekdays from 1:00–4:00 p.m. tend to see the highest clickthrough rates. On Fridays, Facebook use spikes by 10%. Since people tend to be happier on Fridays, Neil Patel suggests posting funny or upbeat content to match your audience's mood.
  • The worst times to post on Facebook are weekends before 8:00 a.m. and after 8:00 p.m., according to SurePayroll's research.
Think of this data as a general guideline, and use it to help you find the optimal posting times for your business.

8.Make sure your blog posts' meta descriptions are complete.

Have you noticed that when you post a link to Facebook, it pulls in a brief description as well as an image?
The description gets pulled from the page's meta description, which refers to the HTML attribute that explains the contents of a given web page. It's the short description you see on a search engine results page to "preview" what the page is about, and it's also the copy Facebook will automatically pull in the populate the description of a post.

Use Facebook Insights.

Facebook Insights is Facebook's internal analytics tool right that helps you measure and analyze your Facebook presence. The tool provides Facebook page administrators with analytics data about Page visits and engagement, which can help you understand which content is and isn't engaging to your fans.
Access your page's Insights here, or by clicking into the 'Admin Panel' on your Page. We've also published an informative blog post and video that walk you through how to analyze Facebook Insights to improve your content strategy.

9. Schedule posts in advance.

Scrambling for Facebook content is not a new phenomenon. We have meetings. We run late. Things come up. That's why you'll want to use a third-party Facebook application like HubSpot's social media publishing tool to schedule your Facebook posts (and other social media posts) in advance.
First, download our free social media content calendar template to help plan your posts in advance. You can fill it in at the same day and time every single week to prep for the following week's social media content. Then, use that third-party Facebook application to actually schedule out your posts.
However, just as we advised against too much Facebook automation with blog auto-posting, the same holds true for scheduling. Don't get caught in the trap of turning your page into a robot, and make sure you're actively engaging with your fans, too.

10. Add Facebook social media buttons to your blog and website.

Adding Facebook social media buttons will help encourage visitors who are on your website to also connect and interact with you on Facebook, as well as spread your content and expand its reach.
The Facebook Follow Button lets you expand your Facebook reach by making it easy for your site visitors to Like your business' Facebook Page with just one click. It displays your page's number of Likes, as well as faces of people who already like your page, using social proof to amplify its effectiveness.
To customize your button, visit this page and follow the instructions.
The Facebook Like Box lets you promote your business' Facebook Page on your website and blog, highlight other users who have already Liked your page, display your follower count, and feature recent posts on your page. With just one click, people can Like your business Page -- without leaving your site.
To generate a Facebook Like Box for your website, visit this page and follow the instructions.
The Facebook Like Button lets people easily Like your content. When a user Likes a piece of content, it may show up in your friends' News Feeds because the algorithm takes it as a signal your friends will find it relevant.
(Note: This button doesn't allow them to add personalized messages to links before sharing them. To allow users to add a personalized message, use the Facebook Share Button, explained below.)
To customize your Facebook Like Button, visit this page and follow the instructions.
Facebook Share Buttons act similarly to the Like Button by sharing your content on their Timeline and in friends' News Feeds, except they also let people add a comment or message to the link when sharing it.
To generate a Facebook Share Button, visit this page and follow the instructions.

11. Subscribe to Facebook's Official Blog for future announcements from Facebook.

Give yourself a competitive edge by staying on top of the latest announcements from Facebook such as new features and tools by subscribing to the official Facebook Blog.

Tips For Advertising on Facebook

23. Choose the right advertising tool. (Probably the Ads Manager.)

Facebook offers users two different tools for creating a paid ad: the Ads Manager and the Power Editor. The Power Editor is usually best for larger advertisers looking for more precise control over many campaigns. If that doesn't sound like you, the Ads Manager works great for most companies. Figure out which is best for your business based on your company size and the number of ads you plan to run at once.

12. Use Audience Insights to learn about your audience.

The best Facebook ads are high-quality, relevant ads that fit seamlessly into the user's environment on Facebook. Learn more about your customers and prospects using Audience Insights, which you can find inside the Facebook Ad Manager in the left-hand navigation.
The tool will help you target your ads more effectively and learn about your audience -- even if you are not advertising to them. How? The data can help you build stronger buyer personas, create more compelling content, and uncover some gems for your competitive research. (Read this step-by-step guide to Audience Insights for more detailed instructions and tips.)

13. Test multiple versions of a single ad.

Running a single campaign won't give you much to work with in terms of finding your audience, optimizing your ads, and determining if Facebook advertising works for your business. You need to be able and willing to run multiple campaigns to test and experiment with different parts of a single campaign.
Test your targeting first, using a simple advertisement and basic image, suggest the Brian Carter for Convince & Convert. "There are usually at least five to ten ways you could target your prospects," he says. "Find the one or two audiences that convert best at the lowest cost per lead."
In order to reach and test on a wider audience, you're going to have to invest a reasonable amount of money on your campaign. The folks at BuzzSumo suggest that number be in the thousands. The reason for this? Facebook ads reward you for testing more ads and targets. Whereas cost-per-click doesn't change much when you're advertising on Google or LinkedIn, Facebook ads cost a lot less if you're diligently testing them.

-- Publish Relevant Content

Quality content is the number one driver of your search engine rankings and there is no substitute for great content. Quality content created specifically for your intended user increases site traffic, which improves your site’s authority and relevance.
Identify a keyword phrase for each page. Think about how your reader might search for that specific page (with phrases like “mechanical engineering in Michigan,” “best applied physics program,” or “Michigan Tech degrees”). Then, repeat this phrase several times throughout the page—once or twice in the opening and closing paragraphs, and two to four more times throughout the remaining content.
Don’t forget to use bold, italics, heading tags, and other emphasis tags to highlight keyword phrases, but don’t overdo it.
Never sacrifice good writing for SEO. The best pages are written for the user, not for the search engine.

-- Update Your Content Regularly

You’ve probably noticed that we feel pretty strongly about content. Search engines do, too. Regularly updated content is viewed as one of the best indicators of a site’s relevancy, so be sure to keep it fresh.

-- Metadata

When designing your website, each page contains a space between the <head> tags to insert metadata, or information about the contents of your page. If you have a CMS site, the UMC web team will have pre-populated this data for you:
  • Title MetadataTitle metadata is responsible for the page titles displayed at the top of a browser window. It is the most important metadata on your page. For those with a CMS website, the web team has developed an automated system for creating the meta title for each webpage.
  • Description MetadataDescription metadata is the textual description that a browser will use in your page search return. Think of it as your site’s window display—a concise and appealing description of what is contained within, with the goal of encouraging people to enter.
  • Keyword MetadataKeyword metadata are the search phrases that people type when they want to find your page. You’ll want to include a variety of phrases. However, don’t get greedy: if your list becomes excessive, the browser may completely ignore the data. As a general rule, try to keep it to about 6-8 phrases with each phrase consisting of 1-4 words. A great example would be "computer science degree."

-- Have a link-worthy site

Focus on creating relevant links within the text. Instead of having “click here” links, try writing out the name of the destination. “Click here” has no search engine value beyond the attached URL, whereas “Michigan Tech Enterprise Program” is rich with keywords and will improve your search engine rankings as well as the ranking of the page you are linking to.

-- Use alt tags

Always describe your visual and video media using alt tags, or alternative text descriptions. They allow search engines to locate your page, which is crucial—especially for those who use text-only browsers.
These are only a few of the many methods for improving your search engine ranking. If you want to learn more, we recommend the following resources:

The best way to be found in Google is by putting yourself in page 1. Obviously, this can be done by few things: Keyword research > SEO optimized post > Social media promotion > Backlinks. So that’s the shortcut way, but now the most cruicial in this is optimizing your content for certain Keyword.

The most important player in this exercise to improve Page Rank of a website or a blog is the inbound links for a particular site. In fact, the success of the great Google page rank is highly dependent on the number of inbound links to a page. Not all links are equal when it comes to backlinks. Links to high PR sites are more valuable than low PR sites, but these inbound links should come from relevant sites to have a beneficial effect on the PR.
Harsh has already shared a post on how he boost a website PR to 3 with no content by blog commenting, which you can read here. Backlink generation is not a tough task and we have already learned 101 ways to get quality backlinks, but for your convinience I’m sharing some quick and easy way to get backlinks:
  • Blog commenting on Dofollow blog
  • Guest posting
  • Forum posting (With signature)
 Article directory submission:
Write the high quality of articles to the popular and high PR article directories with a link back to your site in the bottom of the article at the resource box. Some times These articles will be taken by the webmasters and they will publish on their website that will give you a precious one way inbound link to your site. Google considers these links as the popular votes for your blog or the site and inturn it will help you in increase Google page rank.
Though, after panda backlinks from Article directory is not considered as high backlink, that’s why I recommend to prefer guest posting. But at times, when you need to get quality links in little time, Just to improve page rank, article directory is a good idea.
But before, we move ahead I would suggest you to look into this post:
 Submit blog to Web directories:
A simple way to improve the PageRank of the site is to submit the site or the blog to an appropriate class of high-ranking web directory. If you submit your site to more directories you will get more backlinks, which will increase your sites chance of ranking high in the Google.
Ask other blogger to link to you:
For many this sounds like what I’m saying, but believe me there is nothing wrong about letting other blogger know about an awesome researched article you have done. For example, if you done a great researched article on Getting page rank with 0 backlink, you can tip for that to other bloggers, who write about SEO or page rank, and you might be lucky to get some high quality backlink.
This is what I did couple of twice, I covered some breaking news like facebook launching new photo viewer, and I tipper that to site like mashable.com, all facebook.com and they covered it with a backlink, which is a high quality backlink. More over, getting a mention on good site, also attracts more links, from the reader’s site.
Organize Blog contest:
Blog contest is like easiest marketing formula a blogger can follow. Being a blogger, you can find many product related to your niche and you can run a contest like write a review and link to your blog, or do social bookmarking voting and get free Google+1 and other votes, which helps in better ranking. I also suggest to look out this guide on getting free Blog sponsors for contests. This way, with a contest you will not only earn backlinks, but also it will add into your branding of blog.
See your site in search:
A proper site structure is very important for a SEO optimized site. You need to make sure, Google indexes your site properly and indexing all your content.
First do a search in Google.com with following term :  Site:domain.com
Replace domain.com with your site name, and go to the last page. If you see omitted search result option, click on it and see what all useless pages now Google are showing. If it’s category and tag pages, you can noindex them using Yoast SEO plugin. If your wp-admin, wp-content are indexed, you can stop crawling using WordPress robots.txt.

There are many others way, which you can do but mostly it’s back links which helps.
